As a debut album, a statement of intent it was. Straight from the first track you get the relentless, repetitive riffing that Rammstein are now defined by. The sight of the live performance of their self entitled track, with vocalist Till Lindemann on fire during the performance is still one of the premier stage stunts I have seen at a music concert. Heavy metal is as much about the theatre and image as it is the music no matter what metal purists may tell you , and Rammstein do this unlike any other.
As a side note, I still giggle at the opening lyrics to Seemann. Being a juvenile idiot and English helps this immeasurably. Rammstein grew up considerably by their second studio album Sehnsucht. The tempo slowed down slightly, the production quality improved and Engel and Du Hast have become staples of their catalogue. Rammstein began to showcase their controversial side on this album with songs like Buck Dich which resulted in Till and keyboard wizard Flake Lorenz arrest in Overall the reason this album sits so high on the list is the feast of catchy hooks throughout the album, and not a single bad song in sight.
The top 2 here could quite easily be in either order, such is the quality of both. My first experience of seeing Rammstein live was on the Reise Reise tour in Nottingham, UK and still to this day is one of if not the greatest gig I have ever been to. The sight of Flake cooking in a cauldron whilst Till chases him with a butcher knife during the performance of Mein Teil is a sight to behold.
This album feels like it has the massive hits that took Rammstein up to the top tier, especially here in the UK. Mutter was the album that took Rammstein to the big time outside of their native land. Any song on this album could be a single release.
Opening track Mein Hertz Brent builds beautifully from a tense orchestral intro, to a typically massive set piece. Ich Will and Sonne got huge airtime on Kerrang! Rating: 84 26 votes Comments: 0. The Beatles. Pink Floyd. More than two decades on, it remains the benchmark for industrial metal — an enduring juxtaposition of opposing extremes.
Both playful and sinister, simplistic yet intelligent, soulful and mechanical, it encapsulates the conflict between man and machine like few had done before and have done since. Rammstein broke their decade-long album silence with a pair of opening bowls that were a double-whammy of blunt brilliance.
The first peep at it, meanwhile, was the video premiere of the emphatically-named Deutschland. Fittingly, this cinematic clip was the most Rammstein thing that ever Rammsteined: at once outrageous, subtle, on-the-nose, naked, mysterious, hilarious, cutting and challenging. With lyrics that spoke of a love of their homeland, while also expressing a sadness and disappointment for its shortcomings, the video takes in scenes of German history, some exaggerated for The Rammstein Effect, others served brutally cold.
There were arch references to the Third Reich all over the place, but it was one shot in particular that would become infamous and landed the band in hot water. Possibly, but in a clip in which the main camp guard is a black woman, and the band eventually shoot another Nazi in the face, the point Rammstein were making cannot be misconstrued, even if the irony of the video was in poor taste to some.
Either way, Rammstein had lost none of their smart artistry or clever means of delivering it. What its predecessor, Sehnsucht , provides in vulgar sexual proclivity, Mutter achieves with nuanced emotional maturity and the hardened reservation of an evolving band.
Less bombastic and aggressive but more expansively risk-taking for a group firmly established but still in the prime of their artistic exploration, Mutter is simply extraordinary. In a more just world, Sehnsucht and Mutter would tie for the top spot, but this is the internet and lists aren't fair. So what's the determining factor for why Rammstein's certified star-making sophomore effort edged out the later, more polished Mutter here?
Simply put, you can't fuck with the bangers on this record. Inarguably their most recognizable hit at least to Americans , "Du Hast" is nearing classic-rock status in its iconic stature, and tracks like "Engel" and "Buck Dich" have both earned their rightful spots in the industrial-metal hall of fame as incorruptible essentials.
The latter notably led to Lindemann and Flake's arrest following a particularly raunchy performance. Outside of the obvious beloved hits on Sehnsucht , its flow and dynamism are the concrete proof that naysayers who write Rammstein off as merely shock-value seekers are abjectly wrong. From the vigorous entry point of the album's namesake track through their darkly cheeky rendition of Depeche Mode's slinky "Stripped" found on expanded versions of the release, the record remains the defining moment when Rammstein became more than an interesting band who started a new wave of techno-metal-industrial fusion music; they were a worldwide sensation who would go on to garner a devoted fan base and righteous legacy plus years on.
