In its newly evolved form, Melmetal demonstrated both endurance and strength during Ash's exhibition match with Professor Kukui. He might not have emerged victorious, but he wasn't too far off. Hopefully, it won't be too long before it gets another shot in the main party. Ash caught Sandile during his travels through the Unova region. Truth be told, it couldn't have come at a better time.
He continued to be an important member of Ash's party throughout their time in Unova, although since then has been in and out of the team. It was able to defeat Korrina's Meinshao and then, with a little help from its Mega Evolution form, her Lucario as well.
This elevated Ash to the Great class where he currently remains. It would contribute in Johto as well, but not as much as it did in its native region. Kingler pulled off a number of impressive victories during its time in the anime.
This kind of attitude made the two mesh nicely throughout their time together. Snorlax was featured heavily during the Johto adventures and won several key battles there.
Though lazy, Snorlax has shown itself to be unnaturally strong and athletic. Both are traits that have come in handy more than once. It was the first Pokemon he caught in Johto and proved to be one of his greatest assets while in the region.
Its Blaze ability made it able to come through in clutch situations and often served as the turning point for a battle. As is sometimes the case, Ash eventually released Goodra. As Infernape, and whenever it used Blaze, it went berserk and lost all control. It even hurt Ash, and it took the Trainer much work to get the fire monkey to calm down. Infernape also shares a similar personality with its Trainer, as both it and Ash are always looking for Trainers stronger than themselves. Ash's Unova team isn't the most memorable. Even though he catches all Starters, only one evolves, but it never reaches its final form. Like Chimchar and Charizard before it, Tepig's former trainer also forsakes it.
It willingly goes with Ash after the Trainer shows kindness towards it, but remains unsure of itself. It evolves into Pignite during a battle against its former owner, Seamus, upon which its self-esteem improves, even becoming somewhat vain.
Pignite also shares a deep admiration for Ash's Charizard and a friendly rivalry with his Infernape. Goodra, Noivern, and Talonflame are all exceptional, but it's Greninja who ultimately comes out on top. This proximity ultimately allows it to acquire a unique form known as Ash-Greninja.
