He has spent many hours tuning his pour-over technique, thinking about how to best compare grind quality, and worrying about whether the Nicaraguan or Kenyan beans will make the best cold brew. These days he favors the Hario V60, and starts each day by hand grinding his coffee before enjoying a cup prepared with care and attention to detail. Popular Posts. Related posts. Be extra careful with K cups that contain added ingredients like cream and milk. While coffee will happily last a very long time, cream and milk are perishable items.
Even though the average K cup shelf life can be impressive, these ingredients will go bad eventually. If you found an old K cup and are unsure about its best before date, there are a few ways you can check if it is usable. These are by no means foolproof ways and have their ups and downs. Even so, they can be useful indicators. The first thing to do is check for any holes in the cup that may have exposed its contents to the air.
Similarly, the cup should not have been exposed to heat or direct sunlight. Another simple way is to shake the cup a bit. If it sounds like tiny grains of dry coffee moving around, the cup is still usable. In case it feels like it has pebbles or is clumpy, discard the cup. Irrespective of these conditions, have realistic expectations of taste and quality. For most cups, it will be printed or embossed on the side. Carefully look over the cup to find the date markings.
Sometimes, it can be tiny and you may have to use something like a magnifying glass. Though if you still have the box, the problem is solved. The dates are easier to find and better printed on the box. Thankfully, K cups are popular enough to warrant several storage solutions designed especially for them.
In most cases, keeping them in place that is protected from sunlight, heat, and moisture will do the trick. It features a heat-resistant top panel so it can sit right underneath your pod machine to save on counter space — without impacting the K-Cups tucked away inside.
Freezing opened coffee is not recommended by coffee aficionados. The coffee, tea or dry ingredients needed to create a hot beverage contained in K-Cups are preserved by a combination of two very effective methods. First, ingredients are treated with liquid nitrogen which flash freezes them immediately and effectively.
Once frozen, the contents are vacuum sealed in the K-Cups so that no air or moisture can enter. Flash freezing holds the contents of K-Cups in stasis. Protection from air and moisture prevents natural decomposition and the development of mold. This, in turn, increases the shelf life of Keurig K-Cups. As long as there is no perforation of the K-Cup and the vacuum seal remains intact, the ingredients should be usable for years.
Vacuum sealing is completely safe. Before K-Cups are vacuum sealed, the contents are flash-frozen with liquid nitrogen. You may have heard conflicting reports about the safety of liquid nitrogen because it is extremely unsafe to ingest. How long can I keep K-Cups? Do K-Cups go bad?
